Annie and Henny went back a long way, as bookseller and prized customer, co-workers for their community and, finally, fast friends.

Annie nosed the Volvo onto a sandy patch of ground by a clump of palmettos. The slam of her car dpor seemed over-loud in the heavy quiet. Henny's 1982 black Dodge sedan was in its parking place. Her bicycle was in its rest. The front door was closed.
